on Pedagogy and Chinese Teaching Materials in China |

The Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) /Confucius Institute Headquarters is pleased to announce the 2011 Advanced Study and Training Program on Pedagogy and Chinese Teaching Materials, a week-long program in China for educators of Chinese language designed to strengthen Chinese programs and enhance networking. Local Chinese language teachers are invited to attend this unique, educational trip to China as guests of Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters. The activities and itinerary of this program are tailored especially to the needs of schools / school districts / institutions already teaching Chinese. The focus of this trip will be educational workshops on pedagogy, Chinese teaching materials, classroom audits and best practices. Participants will learn how to strengthen and expand their program by applying the latest and most advanced pedagogy into classroom, making connections with other educators, and gathering valuable teaching resources. The benefits include a broadened awareness of a range of new pedagogies, new print and electronic resources, which are tailored to improve student engagement and enhance acquisition of Chinese language. In addition teachers will develop an international network of professional colleagues for the sharing of instructional practices. This rare opportunity also provides locally trained teachers with the chance to utilize Chinese in an immersion environment. Participants will also be able to learn firsthand about a country that is rapidly changing and rising on the global stage, and one whose language is increasing in international and economic significance.
Recognition: An official Certificate of Course Completion will be awarded to all participants by Hanban.
Theme of the Development Program “Application of New Pedagogy and Teaching Resources to Provide Enhanced Chinese Language Learning” Tentative Itinerary Day 1 - Departure for Beijing, Guangzhou, or Haikou Day 2- Beijing, Guangzhou, or Haikou Day 3– Orientation to current Chinese Education Systems Day 4– Discussion and workshop on new Chinese language teaching pedagogy, including descriptions and discussion about successful models Day 5 – Workshop on new print, electronic teaching, learning materials and modes of application, including implementation of technology Day 6– Classroom activities designed to enhance creativity of instruction and sharing of experience between American/Canadian and Chinese teachers Day 7– Visits to sites that offer an insight into the rich cultural heritage of China Day

Eligibility: 1. Local teachers who are teaching or planning to teach Chinese as a second language in full time school system (including public schools, independent / private schools, charter schools, post-secondary institutions, and other regional schools).
2. Educators from institutions developing new Chinese programs are encouraged to apply (though selection priority will be given to applicants from institutions with existing programs).
3. University students in their third or fourth year or in graduate studies who are planning to become a teacher of Chinese language.
4. Applicants are required to have a working knowledge of Chinese language.
5. Multiple applicants from the same institution will be considered. Each applicant is required to submit an individual application. The applicants might be requested a letter of reference from their local institutions, Confucius Institute, local Chinese Embassy or Chinese Consulates.
6. Applicants are citizens or permanent residents of Canada or US.
7. Participants in 2010 Advanced Study and Training Program on Pedagogy and Chinese Teaching Materials are not eligible to participate.
Please Note: 1. Seat numbers are limited, first come first serve.
2. All selected participants are expected to be actively involved in, and able to speak about their institution's Chinese language and culture program. 3. All applications are subject to individual review, approval and compliance with applicable laws.
Cost to Participants: 1. Participants should be responsible for their Chinese tourist Visa application fee. 2. Participants are also responsible for costs and arrangements related to domestic travel to a designated US/Canadian departure hub 3. Optional travel insurance.
What is included? The following costs are covered by the program:
· Travel costs in China, including accommodations, group meals, local and inter-city transportation costs · Custom training costs and all required instructional materials costs Do I need a passport?Yes! Participants are required to have a valid passport with at least six (6) months validity from the date of departure (i.e. with an expiration date of June.25,2011 or later). Proof of a valid passport will be required to confirm participation of selected applicants. How to apply? 1. Interested teachers can, with the approval of their institutions should apply directly on http://hanban.ca/training.
2. Teachers should email (training@hanban.ca) or fax (778-371-4116 or 604-879-2189) a supporting reference letter from their institutions/ Confucius Institute/ local Chinese Embassy/ or local Chinese Consulates.
3. Once approved, teachers will be notified and will be advised to fill out an on-line travel registration form.
Approval: Hanban will review all the recommendations from the appointed authorities and is authorized to finalize the location for study within China. FAQ 1. Is there any specific requirement for the Reference Letter? Yes. Your reference letter (from your
principal/ local
institution/ Confucius Institute/ local Chinese Embassy/ local Chinese Consulate) should be on official letterhead. It should
be dated and include your name, your referrer’s
name, contact information (i.e. mailing address, phone number and email address
etc.), and their signature. Important note: In order for us to start to review and
process your on-line application, please ensure that your reference letter is
sent directly to us promptly via email (training@hanban.ca) or fax
(778-371-4116 or 604-879-2189). 2. Can the referrer send one reference letter
for the entire group of teachers/students from the same institution? Yes. However, a name
list will be required in the reference letter for the entire group. 3. Can I choose my US/Canadian departure
hub city? No. As such a high volume of flight tickets to Important note: Participants are responsible for the costs and
arrangements related to domestic travel to a designated US/Canadian departure hub city. 4. When is the right time to apply for my Chinese tourist
visa? You can
apply for your Chinese tourist visa on your own after you have received an
acceptance letter from us. We are not responsible for your Chinese tourist visa application. Important note: Participants is responsible for their Chinese tourist Visa application fee. 5. Can I extend my visit in China? We can not
encourage this, however, as you will be responsible for all rescheduling fees
for your return air ticket, all expenses after the training, and all liability
as far as accidents are concerned. Please contact the airlines directly on your own to extend your return air ticket. We are not responsible for helping you to extend your return air ticket. All accidental are under the participant’s own discretion after the training. Important note: Travel insurance is optional. Participants are
responsible for the cost of their own travel insurance. 6. Are
administrators eligible to apply this training program? All applicants are required to have a working knowledge of the Chinese language. Administrators are welcome to apply if they fall in this category. 7. Is
there any lecturer’s name list yet? No. All lecturers in this training program are experts of
Chinese language teaching materials from Hanban/Confucius Institute
Headquarters. 8. Are Chinese guest/volunteer teachers eligible to apply this program? No. This training
program is tailored for US/Canada local Chinese language teachers who work in a
full-time school system. Please check the ‘Eligibility’ section in the
